The list is far from complete but now a start has been made, other names or thimbles can be added. To date there are artists listed who are thought to have painted thimbles this includes women painters’ maiden and married names. Many of the early painters included here may never have painted thimbles!! Thank you in anticipation. As thimbles are so small, when painters’ names were too long the signatures were sometimes shortened or only initials used. I have included the first names even when not part of the signature. If you know the first name of a RW painter, listed here, please share. Most signatures only contain the initial and surname. The signature is usually on the back of the thimble, alongside a leaf or flower sprig.

How to date Royal Bayreuth pottery By Cynthia Smith ; Updated April 12, One of the first factories to make pure, white-porcelain ceramics — available to those who were not royalty — was the German factory that makes Royal Bayreuth. Over 25 marks were attributed to the Koniglich Priv. One reason for so many marks is that each plant manager changed the logos during their tenures.

It is usually carved into the base. Variations of the handwritten letter “T” identified Royal Bayreuth and Tettau products for nearly years. My wie and I took one of these tours years ago, and loved the chance to see behind the scenes and look over the shoulder of the craftsmen and women who created the marvelous pieces of china that bore the Royal Worcester insignia.
The factory is gone now, and the brand absorbed into another porcelain manufacturer, but the heritage of Royal Worcester lives on through a museum housed on the former factory site. The museum boasts one of the largest single displays of Worcester porcelain in the world, and tells the story of how the company developed, and of the manufacture of fine china in England over the centuries.
Royal Worcester The company was granted a royal warrant in , and was for many years the preferred china ware of Queen Elizabeth II. Royal Worcester Porcelain enjoys an avid international following and is highly prized by collectors. The Museum is arranged in three galleries, focussed on the Georgian, Victorian and Twentieth Century periods. An Exhibition Hall hosts an ongoing programme of events, workshops, and lectures. The original museum here was founded as a motivational tool, intended to inspire the factory workers!
Our Visit My wife and I had visited the museum over a decade ago, when the factory was still in full swing, and our tour had included a look at craftsmen and women working on porcelain pieces for production. The works are long gone, and it was rather sad to see the once-busy factory buildings put to other uses.
