It occupies the Salton Basin, a remnant of prehistoric Lake Cahuilla. Almost the entire flow of the river filled the Salton Basin for more than a year, inundating communities, farms and the main line of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Continued filling of the Salton Sink was finally halted in , when a line of protective levees was built by boxcars dumping boulders into the breach from Southern Pacific tracks. By then, this inland lake was about 40 miles long and 13 miles wide, covering an area of about square miles.

This San Diego beach features camping, swimming, surfing, skin diving, fishing and picnicking. The large bluff-top campground is very popular, especially in summer. Stairs lead to the beach.
It was not mentioned anywhere that a huge mound of sand had been built up right in front of all ocean spaces so that you cannot see the ocean from any of those sites. That was incredibily disappointing. In order to actually see the ocean you have to climb over this very high mound of sand. I believe it is being taken down soon for the summer – but beware of this.
When you check in you definetely get the feeling you are entering a “militarized zone”. Very unfriendly at the check in and a LONG list of all the things you cannot do – which you are required to sign off on. This campground is also VERY dog unfriendly – if you have dogs think twice – there is basically nowhere for them to go. The police went through on a regular basis – they were actually much more friendly than the park employees but they had their ticket pads out and looking for any reason to write them.
There are zero amenities – not even a bag of ice is available so plan ahead for that. You are getting a parking space – period – super small and nothing there. I think if you walk a good hike in the summer there may be a snack bar at the pubic beach are but I am not sure about ice. It has been mentioned in other reviews but I will mention it again – the gate closure times are ridiculous.
It is very inconvienent to leave and get back in if it gets close to 7 p.
